What's New for the 2004 Volkswagen Golf?
Changes for the 2004 Volkswagen Golf include a revised turbodiesel engine that makes 100 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, an increase of 10 ponies and 22 lb.-ft. of grunt over last year’s version. An optional OnStar telematics system makes its debut in the Golf, as well as a seatbelt reminder and fuel-cap warning on the dashboard. GLS trim buyers enjoy a standard Monsoon stereo system.

Advantages of the 2004 Volkswagen Golf:

  • Impressive cargo space
  • Nimble handling characteristics
  • Extra features, such as side curtain airbags, go above and beyond most economy hatchbacks

Objections to the 2004 Volkswagen Golf:

  • Last year of the current generation – you may want to wait for a brand new 2005 iteration
  • Pricier than other cars in the compact hatchback class
  • 2.0-liter engine is lethargic and wheezy, especially when paired with the four-speed automatic transmission

Editor's Advice:
Now in its fifth and final year, the current-generation Volkswagen Golf has persevered as the one constant in the roller coaster hatchback movement. We’re happy that these compact, practical cars are hot again, but numerous competitors are vying for your cargo carrying needs, and the Golf is showing its age. Yet with an elegant interior, plenty of passenger and cargo capacity, and two- or four-door configurations, the current VW Golf still appeals to city dwellers who need to get around town with a bit of style mixed in with sensibility. Powering the Golf is a choice of two powerplants: a 2.0-liter engine with 115 horsepower or a 1.9-liter turbodiesel churning out 100 horsepower. Those seeking a bit more zoom from the engine room will want to go for the GTI version, which offers the choice of a turbocharged inline four or a V6 engine. Better yet, wait a little while for the all-new fifth-generation Volkswagen Golf, slated to be bigger and better in all aspects.
